Outreach Ministries

Faith in Action is our ministry team comprised of many individuals who are the heartbeat of our wider community. This team leads our congregation in serving the wider community through supply drives, special collections, holiday sponsorships, and volunteer and educational opportunities.

On Mondays in July, First Christian hosts local groups as we celebrate the diversity of cultures in our community. This often involves sharing song, food and connection. This month long event also collects love offerings for various organizations that support immigrants.

First Christian Church of Iowa City/Coralville is an Open & Affirming Congregation, fully welcoming and affirming people of all sexual orientations and gender identities in every aspect of church life and leadership. One of our joyous ministries is participation in the Iowa City Pride festival and parade on an annual basis.

Every other month, First Christian partners with the Iowa City Free Lunch Program. We provide food, prepare a hot meal and serve as part of this ministry to the hungry in our community.

Each November, we welcome representatives from local agencies to join us for worship and fellowship. Congregation members support these partners through “alternative gift” holiday donations. Through this annual event, we proudly contribute over $10,000 each year to local agencies.

In a ministry that began with our congregation over 40 years ago, we continue to participate in this ecumenical effort to provide warm winter clothing to those in need in our community each fall.
