Our Life Together

Worship is one of the primary ways we connect as a community. We gather each Sunday at 10AM to share in music, scripture, singing, a message and communion. All children are welcome in worship. A nursery is also available if you prefer.

Nurturing the youngest hearts and minds, our kids ministry provides a fun and engaging environment for children to learn about faith, kindness, and compassion. From our thoughtful inclusion of children in worship, to faith formation and other opportunities to connect and make friends, we hope you'll explore our programs designed to help children grow in their relationship with God.

Children and youth are welcome to participate in youth group, providing an opportunity to make friends, play games and have fun while building relationships and providing a safe space to talk. Rooted in loving our neighbor, group activities include outtings and activities, service projects in the community, educational focused field trips, weekend retreats, and more. Our groups include: -- JYF for children in 3rd through 5th grades -- Chi Rho for youth in 6th, 7th and 8th grades -- CYF for highschool youth (9-12th grades)

Faith Formation is an hour of learning and connection and offers opportunities for children, youth, and adults to explore faith, ask questions, and grow together through study, discussion, creative activities, and intergenerational learning. Faith Formation is offered following worship September through May. Nursery care is available.

Disciples Strings & Singers leads music for Sunday morning worship. Musicians and vocalists of all skill levels are welcome to join. Rehearsals are held Wednesdays at 6:00 pm. We also welcome individuals and groups who would like to share special music in worship. Our Handbell Choir meets regularly for rehearsal and provides special music throughout the year during Sunday worship services. New ringers are always welcome.

Getting to know each other is important, so we offer regular opportunities for connection including potlucks, game nights and more!

Intergenerational relationships are life-giving and essential for a thriving community. That’s why we regularly create opportunities for people of all ages to come together—to learn, play, share stories, and serve side by side. In these moments, we not only learn from one another, but also discover the joy of growing in faith together.

Disciples Women is the women's group at First Christian. Members provide support for local ministry and funerals, host educational and social events and share in Bible study as well as fellowship together.

Small groups, typically offered in the fall and the spring, are opportunities for fellowship and learning. Adults are invited to sign up for a small group meeting time and location that works in their schedule.

Join our pastors and others each Wednesday from 12 noon - 1:00 pm CST on Zoom. During this time, we discuss scriptures which are the focus of upcoming sermons. We look at these texts together from different angles, considering context. Connection with life application also adds to the richness of our conversation.

First Christian Church of Iowa City/Coralville is a Green Chalice Congregation. This means we have committed to caring for God's creation through specific actions and practices and signifies a dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability, aiming to reduce the church's environmental impact and promote ecological justice.

Our Ministry Teams are made up of congregation members who help shape and support the life and ministry of First Christian Church. These teams work together to create opportunities for fellowship and connection, plan meaningful worship experiences, nurture spiritual growth through faith formation and special interest studies, and organize service projects and volunteer opportunities that make a difference in our community. Everyone is welcome to participate. Whether you have a passion for worship, learning, service, hospitality, or simply want to get more involved, there is a place for you on a Ministry Team.

There are several fellowship groups that meet regularly, including meals out, coffee with friends and book club. Additional classes, small groups or special events are announced in the monthly newsletter.  Some gatherings may take place at the church or on Zoom, sometimes in personal homes, and other times in the community.
